A long, long time ago, in a digital world far, far away, we wrote about backlinks in a blog post titled “Link Up with Backlinks to Help Your Website Gain Authority.” And, while that blog post is certainly valuable, we’d like to delve deeper into the world of backlinking - right here, right now.

If you know a thing or two about search engine optimization, then chances are you’ve heard about backlinking before. But, if you’re new to the SEO world, then we’ll start with the basics so you don’t feel left out.

First thing’s first - what exactly is a backlink? Simply put, a backlink is a link from a page on one website to a page on an entirely different website. These links are often used to cite sources or connect internet users to related content or products on another website.

Let’s break it down even more. When a website links to your website, that’s considered a backlink for your website. When your website links to another website, then that’s counted as a backlink for their website. That sounds a little like a tongue twister but if you read it more than once it should make perfect sense!

Now that we know what a backlink is, let’s talk about the importance of them, shall we?

If you want your website to get found online, then backlinking is something that you need to know about. That’s because Google - and other search engines - see relevant backlinks to your website as a sign of authority. And, when your website has higher authority, it has a better chance of ranking closer to the top of the list on the search engine results page (SERP).

But wait - that’s not all! Just because a website links to yours doesn’t mean that your website is going to shoot all the way up to the first page of search results. It’s important to note that the websites you get backlinks from need to be relevant to your industry or offerings, and must have a high authority score. Sure, you could get a billion links from a bunch of random websites and think that you’re all set when it comes to backlinking. But that couldn’t be any further from the truth! It’s better to have a handful of really valuable backlinks instead of a ton of backlinks from spam sites or sites with barely any traffic.

While backlinking is a fantastic method to increase your chances of being found in Google search results, it’s also a great way to bring more visitors from other websites. Did you know that backlinks are sometimes referred to as inbound or incoming links? When you think about it, it totally makes sense because these links are brining inbound or incoming traffic to your website!
