Workday Warm-Ups: Our Synapse Stretches for Success

Written by Greyphin | May 16, 2023 7:27:30 PM

What’s your workday morning routine? What kind of a day does it set you up for? Perhaps a little extra planning and reflection in those early hours could make a big difference. After all, you wouldn’t run for 8 hours without at least stretching first, so why should an 8-hour workday be any different? Here at Greyphin, we have a number of thoughtful methods for success. Here are just a few:

Every day starts with a guided tour of my neighborhood. Sometimes Pete the Dog and I simply take in the sights and sounds together, and other times I tune into We Can Do Hard Things or This American Life. Getting up and moving sets a good tone for me.

I’m a bit obsessive. But, I’m particularly obsessed with time; how people spend, save and waste it. So, needless to say, routine is a major part of my life. The order of my post waking operations are as follows:

  • Check Project Notifications: I find this activity most enjoyable and productive at around 6 AM.
  • Check Email: I like to work through email when I have little to no distractions, which is usually before my family or team are moving about.
  • Company Spot Checks: For the role I play, it’s essential I have a moderate to intimate understanding of all the happenings around Greyphin. This exercise helps me do that.
  • Task List Work
  • Shower and Personal Care: I catch up on news and podcasts while I shower.
  • Morning Family Responsibilities
  • The Official Work Day Begins

Every weekday morning, I am up and ready to go at 7 am. My first task is to prepare my coffee and then head outside for yoga. After finishing my yoga routine, I savor my coffee and unwind outside while reading for a quick 10 to 15 minutes. This gets me in the right mindset to tackle my workday with confidence and ease.

I love podcasts and audiobooks during morning chores or driving. Once I arrive to my workspace, I start by playing the same album. Every. Single. Morning. I like to think I am creating a Pavlovian response to hearing it and getting in work mode.

While that’s playing, I create a giant list of the tasks on my plate, so I am less worried I’ll forget something. Then I look through that big list, pick my top three or four priorities for the day, and try to turn them into a tiny poem. Since poems are an attempt to fit big things into small spaces, the process feels appropriate to organizing a busy schedule. This small act of creativity and arrangement is so helpful because it is fun, and I want to come back to the little poem throughout the day, so it reminds me of my goals.

I drink my water and wheatgrass shot, make coffee, get ready.  Nothing too glamorous. I set up my family's day, so make breakfast or set out what they can make.  Look over the calendar for the day and decide on dinner in the morning.  Make sure I know what each kid needs to accomplish for their day (w/chores and school). I like to jump into work early.  I usually try to not listen to anything in the morning, and try not to touch my phone right away.
